What training do Georgia personal care home staff need?
The full Georgia personal care home rule is Chapter 111-8-62. We did not open its training section, so confirm hours there. We did confirm that memory care units in personal care homes need dementia hours under state law: 4 hours of orientation for all staff, and 16 more for direct care staff in the first 30 days.
Personal care homes are licensed by the Georgia Department of Community Health under Chapter 111-8-62. The staffing rule (111-8-62-.10) mostly deals with staff ratios, and the training hours sit in other sections of that chapter that we did not open. Read them before you plan.
What we could confirm:
- If a personal care home runs a memory care center, Georgia Code 31-7-12.4 applies. All staff need at least 4 hours of dementia-specific orientation within 30 days. Direct care staff need at least 16 hours of specialized dementia training within the first 30 days of working on their own with residents, then at least 8 hours every year. The center must keep records of course content, who taught, agendas and attendance.
- The related assisted living rule (111-8-63-.09) lists first aid, CPR, abuse and neglect, and dementia topics, and 24 hours of continuing education in the first year for hands-on staff. That rule is for assisted living, not personal care homes, but it gives a picture of what the state expects.
Before you add a personal care home to your services, ask DCH for the current rule and a training checklist.
