Adult Day Health

What is adult day health in Georgia, and does Medicaid pay for it?

Adult day health is a daytime program with nursing, social services, therapy and meals. In Georgia, the CCSP, SOURCE and ICWP waivers can pay for it when it is on a client’s approved care plan. The client must meet the waiver’s rules. A care coordinator, not the center, authorizes the days.

DCH describes adult day health as a waiver service. It gives daytime supervision at an adult day center, nursing and medical social services, therapeutic activities, physical, speech and occupational therapy, and meals.

How Medicaid pays:

  1. The person must be in a waiver: the Elderly and Disabled Waiver (CCSP or SOURCE) or ICWP. Both list adult day services.
  2. The client must meet the waiver’s rules, including nursing home level of care and a physician-approved care plan.
  3. The care coordinator puts adult day health on the care plan and sends the authorization. The center does not decide.
  4. The center bills Medicaid for the authorized days.

To serve waiver clients, a center must enroll through the same process as other CCSP and SOURCE providers: information session, the September open enrollment window, credentialing, and training. New applicants may apply for only one service.

A separate DCH adult day center license is also required unless exempt (see our licensing answer).

Georgia Pathways does not pay for adult day health. Ask DCH or the Area Agency on Aging about other funding.
