Billing

How much does a home care billing service cost?

Prices vary. Billing services often charge a percentage of money billed or collected, a per-claim fee, or a monthly fee, and add-ons can change the total. We found no neutral government price list. Ask for the fee base in writing: billed or collected, original claims only, and whether corrections cost extra.

No agency or government source sets a standard price, so be careful with any single number you read online.

Common pricing shapes:

  1. A percentage of revenue. Ask if it is on billed amounts or collected amounts. Those can differ a lot when claims deny.
  2. A flat fee per claim. A trade article puts clearinghouse screening at about 25 cents a claim.
  3. A monthly minimum, with or without fees per user.
  4. Set-up or implementation charges.

Questions to ask every vendor:

  1. What is the fee base, and how is it counted? Is a corrected claim counted again?
  2. Is there a monthly minimum?
  3. Are there set-up fees or per-user fees?
  4. What does the fee include? Denial work, appeals, remittance posting?
  5. What do I get in writing if claims come back wrong?

Do the math on your real month. Take last month’s billed total and apply each fee. Then add the hours you spend today.

If a vendor will not put the fee base in writing, that is your answer.
