Training

How many training hours does a home care aide need?

It depends on the type of agency. Medicare-certified home health agencies must give aides at least 75 hours of training. In Georgia, a personal care aide at a private home care agency needs a 40-hour program (or a recognized credential), with 20 hours done before serving clients. Check your service type.

There is no one national number for all home care aides. It depends on who pays and what license you hold.

  1. Medicare-certified home health agencies: federal rule 42 CFR 484.80 says at least 75 hours of classroom and supervised practical training, with at least 16 hours of classroom first and at least 16 hours of supervised practice. A nurse (RN) must check competence before the aide works alone. This rule is for Medicare home health, not for every Medicaid personal support agency.
  1. Georgia private home care agencies (the license many Medicaid personal support agencies hold): Georgia’s rule 111-8-65-.09 calls for a 40-hour program for a personal care aide, unless she already holds a recognized credential such as a nurse aide certificate. Twenty hours must be finished before she serves clients, and the other twenty within six months.
  1. Other settings, like personal care homes or assisted living, have their own rules.

In every case, keep proof. An inspector or Medicaid reviewer will ask for dates, hours, who taught it, and proof she can do the task.

Before you plan your training calendar, confirm which rule applies to your license and waiver. Call Georgia DCH’s Healthcare Facility Regulation Division or read the rule text on the Georgia Secretary of State rules site.
