How do I stop my caregivers from burning out?
Burnout comes from too much work for too little support. Cut the extra paperwork, avoid last-minute schedule changes, match caregivers to clients they get along with, and make sure someone answers when she calls. Watch for early signs: late clock-ins, missed visits, and picking up fewer shifts.
Burnout is not only about hard clients. It is often about extra work and not enough support. The reasons in Home Care Pulse’s list that point this way: poor communication from the office, poor client match, rude office staff, and ideas that are not heard.
What you can do:
- Reduce paperwork. Home Care magazine advises using tools that cut caregivers’ admin work so they can spend more time with clients. Ask her which tasks waste her time.
- Watch the early signs. Late clock-ins, missed visits, forgotten tasks and fewer shifts picked up often show up before a resignation.
- Match well. If a client and caregiver clash, move her sooner rather than later.
- Keep a person reachable. A caregiver who can reach a person quickly feels less alone.
- Give breaks and days off. Do not text her on her day off unless it is urgent.
- Offer a chance to grow, such as training for harder clients.
If a caregiver tells you she is overwhelmed, listen first. If she says she is thinking of hurting herself or someone else, do not wait; get help from your local crisis line right away.
Burnout is common in this work. The aim is to catch it early.
